The Michigan Gaming Control Board has purchased an additional 100 Gamban licences after strong public demand for the blocking software during the first weeks of its rollout.
According to the regulator, more than 80 of the initial 100 licences were claimed within two weeks of launching the partnership with Gamban. This rapid uptake reflected “a clear signal that Michigan residents are actively seeking practical tools to help them manage or eliminate their access to online gambling.”
The agreement allows residents to access Gamban free of charge for periods between one to five years, without requiring prior enrollment in a formal self-exclusion programme from users.
Regulator links programme growth to rising support needs
The MGCB linked the expansion to concerns around gambling-related harm. It referenced estimates from the National Council on Problem Gambling suggesting that around 2% of Americans meet the criteria for gambling addiction.
Gamban blocks access to online gambling platforms across multiple categories, including casino gaming, sports betting, poker, social casino products and NFT-based wagering services.
“The response from Michigan residents in the first two weeks of this programme exceeded our expectations and speaks to a genuine need in our communities,” Henry Williams, a MGCB Executive, said.
Free blocking tools strengthen Michigan player protection efforts
The regulator noted that the Gamban licenses are part of its plans to improve player protection measures within the state.
““We acted quickly to secure an additional 100 licences so that no resident seeking this kind of support is turned away. Michigan is committed to ensuring that the expansion of legal gaming comes with the strongest possible safeguards for the people we serve,” Williams added.
“The strong response to this programme tells us that residents want accessible, device-level support – and we intend to keep delivering it. These additional licences mean more Michigan residents can take back control, free of charge.”
This move by the Michigan Gambling Board is a significant step toward providing players with the tools to engage safely. With over 80 of the 100 licenses already claimed by residents, the regulator has confirmed the demand for responsible gambling support.
