FIRST.bet Poached Pragmatic Play’s LatAm Architect – Now He Has to Do It Again, in a Harder Vertical

Key Points

  • Firstly, Victor Arias, who has been managing the Latin America branch of Pragmatic Play for the past six years after setting it up with a team of just three executives back in 2020, becomes VP and Head of Commercial LATAM at FIRST.bet.
  • His recruitment comes after two key agreements for FIRST.bet that took place successively, namely the renewal of its sportsbook in Brazil (6 August 2026) and an exclusive arrangement with Alea (8 September 2026).
  • The real question competitors are not asking is whether a proven casino localisation playbook translates directly into sportsbook, a vertical with fundamentally different operator demands and pricing dynamics.

FIRST.bet Signs the Man Who Built Pragmatic Play’s LatAm Business

Victor Arias did not just work in Latin America for Pragmatic Play. He started its regional operation from nothing. When Pragmatic Play announced his appointment in July 2020, Arias was brought in to open a Latin American hub headquartered in Argentina with a team of three executives. Six years later, FIRST.bet says that structure became one of the strongest in the industry, calling Pragmatic Play a category leader in casino across the region. Gaming Intelligence’s independent Hot 50 2024, which recognised Arias by name, described him as a key contributor to Pragmatic Play becoming “one of the market leaders” in Latin America.

His career before Pragmatic Play adds further weight. Arias spent close to two decades across B2C and B2B iGaming roles, including a period at Salsa Technology with a focus on Latin American business development. He came to Pragmatic with 20 years of experience already behind him. He leaves with six more years and a regional reputation that is, by any measure, hard to replicate.

FIRST.bet’s appointment announcement makes no attempt to understate its ambition. Arias joins as VP of LATAM and Head of Commercial LATAM, and the company says LatAm is now the centre of everything it does commercially.

What FIRST.bet Has Been Building, and Why the Timing Is Not Accidental?

FIRST.bet is not announcing a Latin American strategy here. It is reinforcing one that has been operational for some time. The company, founded by former SBTech executives and holding licences from the Malta Gaming Authority and Sweden’s Spelinspektionen, has been landing regulated market deals across the continent with some consistency.

The sequence matters: Brazilian operator GANHEI renewed its sportsbook technology partnership with FIRST.bet on 6 August 2026, citing FIRST.bet’s platform as tested under Brazilian live-market conditions, including high-volume live betting and local regulatory requirements. Then, on 8 September 2026, FIRST.bet was named exclusive sportsbook technology partner of aggregator Alea, covering localisation, trading and player engagement across Alea’s operator network. Six days after that, Arias.

Three moves in 40 days is not a coincidence. FIRST.bet is assembling a LatAm commercial operation in real time, and Arias is the piece that makes the operator conversation credible.

Tom Light, founder and CEO of FIRST.bet, said: “LATAM has to be serviced by LATAM. That is how we are building the business, and Victor has run that playbook at the highest level already. He knows these markets are not one market. Having him lead our commercial effort in the region is the strongest signal we can send about how seriously we take it.”

A Region That Rewards No One for Arriving Late

The forecasted regulated gross gaming revenue generated from online betting in Latin America is estimated at USD 7.86 billion in 2027, up from USD 1.56 billion in 2023, according to data from Vixio GamblingCompliance. Brazil alone is forecasted to contribute almost half of this total figure, and Brazil’s CAGR in the region will be the highest according to forecasts made by Grand View Research until 2033. The Brazilian system of federal fixed odds betting was launched on 1 January 2025, and many betting operator licenses have been granted by the SPA since then.

FIRST.bet CCO Amram Vita framed the commercial reality directly: “Commercially, Latin America is where the sharpest growth in this industry is happening, and it is not won from a distance. Victor has spent years earning the trust of the operators who set the pace in these markets, and that trust does not transfer to just anyone.”

That last point is one that suppliers entering LatAm from the outside consistently underestimate. Operator trust in this region is built face to face, across years, with knowledge of how each market moves at its own pace, under its own regulator, with its own player profile. Arias brings exactly that, across Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, each market covered separately in FIRST.bet’s own announcement.

From Casino to Sportsbook: The Question the Hire Quietly Raises

Here is where the appointment gets genuinely interesting, and where we think competitors and observers have been too polite to push back.

Arias built Pragmatic Play’s LatAm operation in casino and live casino, the vertical FIRST.bet has no interest in. He now arrives at a sportsbook supplier. Casino and sportsbook operator relationships in LatAm share some overlap at the commercial level, but the products are structurally different. In sportsbook, operators scrutinise trading depth, local market coverage, live pricing accuracy and risk management against local league and bettor behaviour. Casino localisation sits in a different part of the operator conversation. Arias knows the operators. Whether he knows FIRST.bet’s sportsbook product as well as he knew Pragmatic Play’s casino portfolio is a question the company has not answered publicly, because they almost certainly do not need to: his job is commercial, not technical.

Still, what he has proven is the most defensible thing a hire can demonstrate: that he has already taken a supplier from zero to category leadership in this exact region. FIRST.bet’s claim that he did it “market by market” is supported by the record. What he walks into at FIRST.bet is a sportsbook product that has already won Sportsbook Supplier of the Year at the SBC Awards 2025, EGR LATAM Awards 2025 and EGR B2B Awards 2026. The product argument exists. The question is whether the product and the network, combined, close deals at the pace FIRST.bet needs.

Victor Arias put it simply: “We are bringing Tier-1 sportsbook technology together with a completely localised strategy. The goal is ambitious but simple: to make FIRST.bet the number one sports betting partner in Latin America, with a truly local identity.”

Expert Analysis: The Most Interesting Risk Is the One Nobody Is Naming

We think this is the right hire at the right moment, and that the industry has been almost uniformly too congratulatory in covering it. Here is the harder version of the story.

Arias’s tenure at Pragmatic Play coincided with an ideal set of conditions: a globally recognised multi-vertical product, a budget large enough to build and sustain a localised team, and a casino vertical that was already the default entry point for operators across LatAm. FIRST.bet is a challenger supplier, not a category default. Its sportsbook product has genuine credentials, but it is entering markets where the operator relationships Arias holds were built around a completely different product conversation.

The reason why this move holds any credibility is that Arias himself seems to recognise the difference. His comments in 2025 and 2026, which included an interview with Focus Gaming News prior to SBC Summit Rio 2026, all seemed to point towards a man who operates with an awareness of differences on the ground level as opposed to a regionally-based strategy approach. This is the sort of subtle insight that the business side of Latin America actually wants to see. It is whether or not the FIRST.bet product can live up to what Arias has opened the door to, particularly in a Brazilian market in the midst of establishing its regulatory guidelines through the SPA, that is the next chapter in the story.
