Betsson Brings Charitable Efforts Together With New Foundation

Key Points

  • Betsson formed a public benefit trust company based in Malta in October 2026 to manage existing and future philanthropic, community, and sporting programs.
  • No specific amounts or individuals on the Board were listed, and decisions regarding donations will be made on a case-by-case basis.
  • Entain has committed £100 million over five years, while the Denise Coates Foundation publishes its accounts with named trustees. Betsson has yet to meet either standard.

What happens when a gambling group posts its best quarter ever, then opens a charity foundation with the budget left blank? Betsson gave its answer in October. The group launched the Betsson Foundation as a registered public benefit entity in Malta. Its job is to bring the group’s charitable, community and sports work under one roof, covering both existing and new initiatives. The past projects behind it look genuine, which is exactly why the missing details stand out.

Three Governing Bodies, No Names

Oversight sits with three bodies: the founding company, a Board of Administrators and a Supervisory Council. Betsson says this setup provides “oversight and accountability”. Neither the launch release nor the foundation’s website names a single member of the board or the council.

Before October, Betsson’s giving ranged from staff fundraising to grassroots projects and club-linked CSR campaigns. Jonna Danlund, Betsson’s Director of ESG, told NEXT.io the foundation is a “natural next step” for that work. Her goal for the first 12 months is to make it a clear platform for social impact, with stronger governance across markets.

Peru Led the Launch, but Other Work Came First

The release named one programme, Boosting Up, a five-year scheme in Peru. It supports 22 participants from a single school in Lima through football, English lessons and nutritional support. Betsson described it as “one recent example”, not a full record.

A wider picture appears on the foundation’s project page. Colombia earthquake relief is dated 17 August 2026, about six weeks before the launch release. Anti-bullying work and the Wings for Life World Run sit alongside it. Even earlier, a Greek event listing named the Betsson Foundation as a partner of the Greek Association of Women Entrepreneurs. That programme against bullying and mobbing opened with a seminar at the Olympic Museum of Athens on 29 April 2026. In practice, the foundation was working months before the world was told it existed.

Peru taking the spotlight still invites a closer look. Betsson’s second-quarter report shows Latin America grew 32 per cent and became its largest region, with more than a third of group revenue. CEO Pontus Lindwall called Peru and Argentina the region’s “brightest stars”. Betsson has not explained how it chooses which projects to feature, so any link between the showcase and the revenue map remains a question rather than a finding.

A Record Quarter With No Figure Attached

Those Q2 numbers show the scale behind the blank budget line. Group revenue reached €310.2 million, up 2 per cent and the highest of any quarter in Betsson’s history. Active customers rose to 1.8 million from 1.4 million. Operating income (EBIT) fell 39 per cent to €42.2 million, as higher gaming taxes and weaker B2B income bit into margins. Cash comfortably exceeded borrowings, with net debt at minus €128.4 million. Locally regulated markets now supply 76 per cent of revenue, up from 66 per cent a year earlier.

Their competitors know how clear disclosure works. Entain’s foundation was established in September 2019 and then promised £100 million over five years in November 2020. The funds would be used for safer gambling, grassroots sports development, and diversity in technology and community programs. The Denise Coates Foundation, which is funded by bet365, has taken yet another approach by preparing annual accounts that provide information on who the trustees are. The Charity Commission data reveal that £130 million worth of donations and £16.82 million worth of charitable expenditure were recorded during the year to March 2025. This is easily comparable to previous years. Betsson has not done anything of the sort with its foundation.

Where Sponsorship and Charity Meet

Jesper Svensson, CEO of Betsson Operations, said sport and community engagement “have long been part of Betsson’s DNA”. The foundation will lean on the group’s sports partners, a network that includes Inter, Club Brugge and Boca Juniors. Those clubs also carry heavy commercial weight; Lindwall credited the Inter sponsorship with helping Betsson grow in Italy.

Real community work has already flowed through that network. In February 2026, Betsson gave up its front-of-shirt space so Club Brugge could promote blood and plasma donation across Flanders. In late 2025, Greek basketball partners Aris Betsson and Mykonos Betsson joined an anti-bullying campaign. Betsson is also open to the idea that its social impact criteria can include brand exposure where relevant. Nothing about that is improper, as many sponsors fund good causes at partner clubs. Telling community spending apart from marketing gets harder, though, when both travel down the same channel. A board with publicly known members would be the clearest way to show where that line is drawn.

Expert Analysis: The Names Matter More Than the Number

It is clear that the blank budget, though real, is the smaller discrepancy. The large amount of money promised in the press release says nothing at all until audited accounts back up the promises. However, Coates provides an even better lesson: it is a matter of £130 million versus £16.82 million spent on doing something good. The mere size does not say anything to the readers; only a regular and verifiable report allows one to evaluate the foundation fairly.

Our opinion is that independence is really what matters and starts with the person who approves each grant. The foundation designed to act via sponsored clubs requires someone able to reject the project desired by the marketing department. The list of such people has not been revealed by Betsson. Some people will claim that the sponsored foundation gives help for real and will refer to the blood drives and work against bullying. Others will claim that the charity provided via sponsorship is a way to promote the brand using a new letterhead. There is no way to prove which opinion is right without information about the board members and grants’ amount.
