JO1 member Shion Tsurubo is currently under investigation by Japanese authorities on suspicion of illegal online gambling. The 24-year-old idol allegedly placed around ¥15 million in bets over the span of nine months on the offshore gambling platform K8, losing nearly half of the amount in the process. Though K8 is legally registered overseas, gambling is strictly prohibited within Japan even on legal international sites. 

According to reports, Tsurubo accessed the site using his smartphone, often while traveling for group promotions and performances. Online roulette appeared to be his preferred game. During questioning, he allegedly stated, “I like pachinko and I could do it anywhere,” suggesting a casual attitude toward gambling. 

The case came to light through a criminal investigation into illicit funds. Tsurubo was voluntarily questioned earlier this year and formally accused of “simple gambling,” a charge that may seem minor but could lead to prosecution.

A Scandal, Then a Speedy Return

On May 31, Lapone Entertainment, the agency representing JO1, issued a statement confirming that Tsurubo would take a 10-day break from group activities to reflect on his actions. During this hiatus, he reportedly completed a short rehabilitation program and participated in internal discussions about social responsibility. 

By June 10, Tsurubo had resumed public activities, appearing at group events and expressing remorse for his actions. Lapone’s statement declared he would return more sincere than ever, and Tsurubo himself issued a written apology to fans, expressing deep shame and a commitment to regain their trust.

Online Gambling’s Murky Legal Waters in Japan

While digital gambling platforms like K8 are accessible within Japan, participation remains illegal. However, the industry continues to boom with Japanese users spending on overseas sites estimated to exceed ¥1.2 trillion. This shows a disconnect between the law and reality.

Tsurubo is hardly alone in using these platforms, but his status as a celebrity made him a high-profile example. His case highlights the growing tension between public perception, legal enforcement, and sites operating in legal gray zones.

Public Image or Public Justice?

Tsurubo’s situation has raised broader questions about how justice is applied and who will be held accountable. With no formal charges filed yet, it remains unclear whether prosecutors will pursue the case or let it go. Regardless of the legal outcome, the court of public opinion has taken notice. Having allegedly lost ¥7 million, Tsurubo faces the greater gamble of whether a brief break and apology will be enough to maintain his place in the spotlight.
