The Indonesian government stepped up efforts to shut down illegal gambling sites. Jakarta Police last week linked and subsequently arrested individuals connected with the TAHU69 gambling site.
Jakarta Globe said that two individuals, 29-year-old Obed and 28-year-old Alfredo, were arrested by the police. They were apprehended from a residential complex and a commercial complex. Obed had been held at the police station since April 26, and Alfredo since May 2. The investigation on both suspects continues with the police.
Police stated that these two earned around 100 million Rupiah per month, which is approximately $6,000. This is quite large compared to what most Indonesians make, which is approximately $700 a month.
Resa Fiardi Marasabessy, head of the Mobile Detective Sub-Directorate of Jakarta Police, released a statement.
He described how the police squad apprehended the two individuals operating the TAHU69 online gambling website.
Within four months, the overall profit from this website achieved close to 400 million Rupiah, exhibiting monthly profits of approximately 100 million Rupiah.
Indonesia Faces Ongoing Illegal Gambling Issues
TAHU69 was popular with users as it offered casino games, book sports, and a lottery system in one. This country applies harsh no-gambling regulations in its legislation. The government announced plans early this year for stricter regulations on gambling. Law enforcement continues to handle regular busts and arrests concerning gambling activities.
In early May, Indonesian police seized property valued at $36.2 million and arrested a student in April for advertising gambling.
The Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs blocked approximately 1.3 million websites associated with gambling and pornography during March.
While tough measures are still being done in Indonesia and surrounding areas, Thailand proposed an “Entertainment Complex Bill” concept. If this bill is approved, it will permit construction of casinos in resorts, a quite different path from that of Indonesia.
