In a campaign to eliminate illegal gambling across Metro Manila, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has arrested more than 2,500 individuals in under two months. The intensified crackdown took place between June 2 and July 23. It targeted unlicensed betting activities including cockfighting, jueteng, bingo, and numbers-based lotteries. 

A total of 2,573 suspects were apprehended during 1,119 operations conducted by law enforcement units across the region’s five key jurisdictions. The areas involved in the anti-gambling drive include the Manila, Quezon City, Northern, Eastern, and Southern Police Districts.

Targeting Unlawful Numbers Games and Betting

Authorities have pointed to the persistent presence of illegal numbers games as a major concern. These unregulated activities, often seen as community-level gambling schemes, remain banned under Presidential Decree 1602. According to figures released by the NCRPO, PHP 568,992 worth of gambling proceeds were seized. This includes PHP 97,160 connected to unauthorised numbers games, accounting for the arrest of 270 individuals suspected of engaging in these prohibited activities.

Police noted that many operators attempt to pass these games off as harmless entertainment, but the financial and social consequences can be far-reaching, particularly in vulnerable communities. The recent operations saw police dismantling several small-scale setups and apprehending both organizers and bettors. Authorities also uncovered attempts to disguise illegal betting dens as informal gathering spots to avoid detection.

Five Police Districts Unite in Coordinated Action

The crackdown represents one of the most coordinated efforts in recent years by the NCRPO to tackle illicit gambling. The office worked in tandem with local units from the five police districts, combining intelligence, surveillance, and community tip-offs to identify and intervene in illegal gaming operations. 

The combined operations across all five jurisdictions demonstrate an aggressive stance toward underground gambling networks. As part of ongoing public safety initiatives, the NCRPO also confirmed that further operations would continue throughout the year. These efforts form part of a larger campaign aimed at reducing crime rates and ensuring compliance with national gambling regulations.

Community Urged to Support Enforcement Drive

In a statement, NCRPO leadership appealed to the public for continued vigilance and cooperation. Citizens are encouraged to report instances of unauthorised gambling through the 911 emergency hotline or directly to local law enforcement. 

The NCRPO emphasised that community participation is crucial to sustaining progress in the fight against illegal gambling. By working together with residents, police believe they can curb the spread of underground gambling culture. Authorities reiterated their commitment to pursuing violators and safeguarding public order, warning that anyone found operating or participating in unlicensed gambling schemes will face the full weight of the law.
