ACMA Cracks Down on Illegal Online Gambling Sites

Internet service providers were told by ACMA to stop access to more illegal gambling sites. It is the newest in a line of actions taken to prevent Australians from using illegal digital gambling sites.

Crown Slots and Billy Billion were the latest sites to be blocked after ACMA found they were operating without an Australian licence. Investigations confirmed they were offering gambling services without the necessary approval.

This is part of a broader crackdown that started in 2017 when ACMA was given more powers. Since then, around 220 illegal gambling services have voluntarily left the Australian market and 1,178 websites have been blocked. The first blocking orders were issued in November 2019.

ACMA says unlicensed online gambling operators often don’t provide basic consumer protections. Players using these services have no way to recover lost funds, dispute outcomes or access responsible gambling tools. While these sites may look legitimate, they are not regulated and players are at risk of financial loss.

To help the public make informed decisions, ACMA has a public register of licensed wagering providers. Australians can check if a gambling service is allowed to operate in the country. ACMA also has guidance on how to identify and report illegal operators on its website.

In other news, last month ACMA added eight more gambling sites to its block list including JokaRoom, AUDPokies888 and Wild Pokies as part of its ongoing campaign to reduce the number of illegal gambling sites.

It’s not only online. ACMA just concluded an investigation of Network Ten (Sydney) for violating advertising standards. The broadcaster featured gambling promotions during the 2024 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in violation of the Australian Commercial Television Code of Practice.

With enforcement activities on several fronts, ACMA is determined to decrease illegal gambling risks and safeguard Australian consumers in both online and offline media.
