Spelinspektionen Announces Supervision of Svenska Spel’s Gaming Venues

Sweden’s gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, also known as the Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA), has announced new supervisory measures for Svenska Spel, the country’s main gambling operator. The review will look at all of Svenska Spel’s land-based gaming locations across Sweden.

The SGA says it will check Svenska Spel’s revenue and where cash machines are placed in its gaming venues. These checks are part of the authority’s effort to ensure that gambling companies operate responsibly and comply with Swedish laws.

As part of the process, Svenska Spel must provide written information and allow SGA officials to conduct on-site inspections. The regulator said the results of the review will be published once the investigation concludes. This move highlights Sweden’s commitment to maintaining a safe and transparent gambling market.

Part of Wider Regulatory Oversight in Sweden

The new review follows a recent fine of SEK 4.8 million (around $500,000) issued to Kanon Gaming by Spelinspektionen. The fine came after an investigation found that the operator failed to meet its duty of care responsibilities toward players.

Spelinspektionen has been tightening oversight of licensed operators to ensure compliance with national laws. The regulator continues to stress that gambling companies must prioritize player protection and responsible gaming practices. This includes strict control over how gambling products are marketed and managed at physical venues.

Through these inspections, the authority aims to ensure that operators like Svenska Spel maintain proper standards in areas such as cash handling, customer care, and responsible gambling behavior.

Leadership Change at Spelinspektionen

This development also coincides with a leadership change at Spelinspektionen. The regulator confirmed that Director General Camilla Rosenberg has stepped down after eight years of service. Rosenberg played a major role in shaping Sweden’s gambling regulations and strengthening the authority’s role in promoting accountability.

Reflecting on her time at the regulator, Rosenberg described the experience as both intense and rewarding. “As a public authority, we have achieved a lot in a short time, not least thanks to the broad expertise within the organization,” she said.

Rosenberg has now been appointed Director and Head of the Swedish Estate Agents Inspectorate. She said that the lessons learned from her time at Spelinspektionen will guide her in her new role.

Maintaining Responsible Gambling Standards

The review of Svenska Spel follows as Sweden works to make its gambling market more transparent and better protect players. The regulator’s strategy combines inspections, fines, and policy updates to ensure a responsible industry. It also reflects Spelinspektionen’s continued commitment to ensuring that gambling remains fair, safe, and free from criminal influence.

By maintaining close oversight, Spelinspektionen aims to strengthen trust in Sweden’s gambling system and prevent misuse. The results of the Svenska Spel review are expected to show how effectively the operator meets national standards.
