Spelinspektionen Fires Out SEK 4.8m in Sanctions to Kanon Gaming

Kanon Gaming did not meet its required duty of care responsibilities, leading to regulatory action and financial penalties.

Key Points

  • Spelinspektionen imposed a sanction of SEK 4.8m on Kanon Gaming.
  • The penalty was decided based on the length and seriousness of the duty of care failings.

The Swedish gambling authority Spelinspektionen fined Kanon Gaming SEK 4.8m ($0.5m) after identifying major failings in responsible gambling duties. Kanon Gaming had appealed against the sanction, but the court confirmed the penalty should remain high due to both the seriousness and extended duration of the failings. Authorities acknowledged that Kanon Gaming acted quickly and cooperated with Spelinspektionen, which helped reduce the total fee amount to some degree.

Spelinspektionen Cracks Down on Unlicensed Gambling Operators

Spelinspektionen, as Sweden’s gambling regulator, issued multiple sanctions this year, including bans and fines, targeting companies violating Swedish gambling law. Most recently, Spelinspektionen banned Bitx Operations and Ryker for targeting Swedish players without the correct license to provide gambling products in the country. Important to note, following Camilla Rosenburg’s exit in early September, Johan Röhr was officially appointed as the new General Director of Spelinspektionen.

Earlier this month, Spelinspektionen’s channelisation report revealed 85% of Sweden’s gambling activity occurred in regulated channels, leaving 15% to unregulated betting markets. The Swedish Government plans to investigate this imbalance, though several groups have questioned whether the chosen methods can address the market issue effectively.
