The NBA and WNBA have partnered with the National Council on Problem Gambling to launch a responsible gambling campaign targeting basketball fans during the 2026/27 season.
This initiative will address the risks linked to sports betting and prediction markets among young adults and encourage fans to view wagering as entertainment rather than a source of income. Another talking point will be the effects gambling can have on finances, mental wellbeing and relationships.
Campaign Encourages Fans To Set Limits And Avoid Unaffordable Wagers
This campaign advises fans to set limits on the time and money they spend betting or participating in prediction markets. It will also warn them against using money they cannot afford to lose.
The NBA, WNBA and NCPG aims to direct fans towards responsible gambling information and provide support services for players with at-risk behaviour. “Through this campaign, we want to help fans make informed decisions, understand the risk and, if they choose to bet, trade or anything similar, that they do so responsibly,” NBA head of media distribution and partnerships Scott Kaufman-Ross said.
Its focus on traditional betting and prediction markets reflects the expanding range of ways fans wager on sporting outcomes.
WNBA And NCPG Support More Practical Guidance For Younger Fans
WNBA chief growth officer Colie Edison said reaching WNBA audiences would help extend practical guidance on financial risk, personal limits and available support.
“Helping our fans make informed decisions is central to this effort. By bringing this campaign to WNBA audiences, we can reach more fans with practical guidance on understanding financial risk, setting limits and recognising when and where to find support,” Edison said.
NCPG president Derek Longmeier described the campaign as an “important first step” towards preventing gambling-related harm. “We’re proud to support a campaign that brings greater visibility to the risks of sports betting and prediction markets and puts education at the forefront, helping fans better understand the potential for harm and the resources available to those who may need help,” Longmeier said.
The joint NBA and WNBA campaign gives responsible gambling messaging access to large and highly engaged basketball audiences, including younger fans exposed to prediction markets. Its emphasis on practical limits and support is commendable, but education alone cannot address every risk.
