Meridianbet Acquires Fairbet To Boost Retail Footprint In Malta

Golden Matrix subsidiary Meridianbet has expanded its retail presence in Malta with the acquisition of Fairbet. The transaction adds nine new storefronts to its existing operations, bringing its total retail footprint in the country to 20 locations. Their network also includes over 60 sports betting terminals and 120 slot machines.

Fairbet operates under a licence issued by the Malta Gaming Authority and will now be integrated under the Meridianbet brand. The transition is set to take place immediately, aligning the new locations with Meridianbet’s technology and operational systems.

Deal strengthens position in high barrier market

Meridianbet chief executive Zoran Milosevic described the acquisition as a strategic move.

“Completing the acquisition of Fairbet strengthens our position in a market where regulatory barriers create inherent scarcity value. The transaction will enable us to expand our operations and retail infrastructure in Malta, with our technology serving the majority of licensed retail gaming in the country. The deal also demonstrates our strategic M&A approach – targeting acquisitions in high-barrier markets where limited licensing to create structural competitive advantages,” he said

According to the company, Malta’s regulatory framework introduces strict capital requirements and compliance standards that create a natural barrier to entry.

Integration builds on earlier licensing agreement

The acquisition follows a multi-year licensing agreement signed between the two companies in December. This latest transaction gives Meridianbet full ownership of Fairbet’s retail distribution network.

Following the integration, Meridianbet will operate its own retail locations while also managing the retail gaming operator’s existing infrastructure. This move will help the Golden Matrix subsidiary to streamline retail operations and strengthen brand consistency across Malta.

Malta remains key operational hub for growth

Meridianbet has maintained a presence in Malta for over 15 years, using the jurisdiction as a base for its European operations. The company noted that the Malta Gaming Authority’s licensing framework emphasises investor protection, technical compliance and strict oversight, positioning operators licensed in Malta for credibility across markets on the continent.

With the Fairbet acquisition complete, Meridianbet now holds two of Malta’s three retail gaming licences.
