Key Points
- WARN notices filed 28 September with Nevada authorities sent shockwaves through the local workforce 198 workers are set to lose their jobs at Maverick Casino Hotel and 41 at the Gold Country Inn and Casino.
- Those WARN notices hint at the possibility of a new owner or operator buying the properties but so far, no one’s stepped forward to claim that prize.
- Nevada was a bit of a quiet kid on the block when Maverick NV LLC’s bankruptcy drama began back in July 2025. Not anymore.
Two Elko Casinos Get a Make-or-Break 30 November Deadline
Two casinos staring each other down from opposite sides of Idaho Street in Elko have an ‘exit date’ and it’s not exactly a gentle exit. A WARN notice has been sent to Nevada officials by Maverick NV LLC, signed off by Human Resources director Leticia Flores, setting a date of 30 November 2026 for the end of about 239 jobs.
The Maverick Casino Hotel at 2065 Idaho Street looks set to lose around 198 of those workers, while the Gold Country Inn and Casino, right across the road at 2050 Idaho Street, faces losing about 41 more. That WARN notice for Gold Country leaves no room for misinterpretation: “This letter is to inform you that Maverick NV LLC intends to permanently and completely close down the Gold Country Inn and Casino” It’s the same story for the hotel.
The 239 figure only accounts for the workers that are actually mentioned in those WARN notices, not the ‘real deal’ job losses that might be looming. And that’s what makes this all so much more worrying.
Why the Shutdown Is Still Not a Done Deal?
Now you might be wondering, “hang on a minute, this all sounds pretty cut and dried”… but it isn’t. There’s a ‘get out of jail free’ clause lurking in the small print both WARN notices say that if a new operator or owner comes in, the closure might not go ahead, or at the very least, might be pushed back.
But here’s the thing: no buyer’s name has been mentioned, and no timeline’s been laid out for any takeover. That’s got to be keeping employees up at night, wondering if they’re going to lose their jobs or if someone’s going to ride to the rescue.
Washington Proves a Closure Announcement can Lead to a Sale
Similar wording was used in the closure notices of eight casinos in Washington issued by Maverick Washington LLC in the same week. There, the condition quickly became real news.
According to KIRO Newsradio, the owner of Maverick Gaming, Eric Persson, said he is purchasing all eight casinos back and will keep them operating. According to the interview published by MyNorthwest, the deal will be completed in roughly three weeks and will allow hiring some 850 people.
“The employees are being terminated as it relates to the old company and being rehired by the new company, but the properties themselves will stay open,” Persson said.
He also admitted that the notices left everyone in confusion. “It would have been helpful, I think, if the WARN notice said that you know there was an expected transition with another party,” he added.
Persson says that his current Maverick Gaming firm operates outside of bankruptcy. As he explained, he sold the assets to the lenders in July 2025 and later repurchased the brand name. According to the Nevada notices, Maverick NV LLC itself is still going through bankruptcy.
In any case, Washington demonstrates how an announced closure can be reversed with a sale. It does not demonstrate how a rescue operation is planned in Elko since Persson did not comment on the Nevada sites.
Rent Payments Have to Be Made by This Date Plus One Day
There is one particular date in the court records that deserves closer consideration. According to the bankruptcy filing recently released, summarised by TheStreet, temporary rent concessions granted by the landlord Blue Owl were helping to keep certain properties open. These concessions end on 1 December 2026.
From this point onwards, according to the debtors, they will be unable to keep the properties running that have not yet been transferred or settled in another way. The filing talks about “certain properties”, hence, it is unknown if both Elko sites belong to the group mentioned. At any rate, the deadline falls just one day after the date of the notices.
In the same filing one can see how low the company had sunk financially. EBITDA decreased from $52.1 million in 2021 to $16.5 million in 2023, whereas the total debt amounts to roughly $306 million.
From Safe Harbour to Centre Stage
Just 15 months ago, Nevada appeared immune from the problem. As reported by The Nevada Independent, when the bankruptcy filing occurred in July 2025 in Texas, the five Nevada properties were not considered problematic and continued operations.
The filing showed debts totalling $315 million spread across several loans and a $22.5 million debtor-in-possession financing agreement. Mayor Reece Keener of Elko remained optimistic at the time. “These properties have been a staple in Elko for more than a generation, and I am confident that they will recover from this bump in the road,” he wrote.
The Elko story started for Maverick in 2019 when it completed its acquisition of three Elko casinos, including Gold Country and the former Red Lion Casino now Maverick Casino Hotel. The debt exchange of 2024, considered by S&P to be a default under their criteria, happened a year earlier.
Washington State, the company’s largest market, turned into one of its main problems. The chief restructuring officer Jeff Seery attributed the situation to the competition from tribal casinos and higher labour costs, explaining that “the significant minimum wage increases in the Tukwila market” was one of the main concerns.
Numbers from Elko Tell Us That There Is No Market Collapse
Market demand for gaming does not seem to be collapsing. According to the August report by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, Elko County managed to win $36.5 million, 2.88 per cent less than last year.
Except for the part of the county around Wendover, where Elko city is located, Elko lost just 0.27 per cent, winning $12.26 million. Statewide, Nevada casinos won $1.27 billion, 3.14 per cent more.
During the quarter ending August, Elko County’s win actually increased 2.62 per cent reaching $105.6 million. However, these numbers do not suggest any loss of customers. Yet, they cannot show us what each individual property did or why they got these notices.
What to Look for in Elko After This?
There will be several indicators before 30 November that indicate the direction things will take. First of all, a sale or an operating agreement will be submitted to the bankruptcy court in Texas. Any new operator will require a license from Nevada’s gaming commission, thus making the transaction public. An updated WARN notice or a statement about the buyer from the company will be the strongest signal.
Teamster leaders in Washington are aware of the pattern that has been playing out for months. The secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 117, Paul Dascher, stated that “Maverick facilities have changed hands during this process.”
Expert Analysis: The Rescue That’s About to Happen… or Not?
The 2025 message about Nevada safety was taken too literally by the local authorities and residents. The bankruptcy included the debts of the group all the time, and Elko properties were never out of reach from it.
The larger problem that we see here is the lack of information about the situation for workers. The WARN notice is lawful and typical in such cases, but it leaves 239 people unaware of half the truth. Persson said that more transparent notices could help in Washington, and we believe that Elko workers deserve that much.
We also think that readers will be sharply divided about the buyback process. Its supporters will see the founder’s efforts to save jobs and buildings from falling into oblivion. Critics will wonder why the head of the debt-fueled expansion now buys back assets from the same creditors. Both positions can be built from public information, and neither of them has been proven in Elko.
For us, there is no doubt. Rapid expansion using borrowed money is the story of these sites, not the unpopularity of gaming in the town. The closure of the casinos, in our opinion, will mean the verdict of the balance sheet and nothing else.
If there is no buyer before the date when the rent comes due, this situation will remain open. Until someone buys these properties, we think that everyone working on Idaho Street should take the deadline seriously.
