Flutter Entertainment has appointed Edward Traynor as interim group chief legal officer after Don Liu retired from the position.
Liu submitted his resignation to Flutter’s board on 28 September and formally left the company two days later. He had returned from retirement in April 2025 to take the role on an initial three-month basis, but remained in the position for approximately 18 months.
Traynor Adds Legal Leadership To Existing Company Secretary Role
Traynor formally became Flutter’s interim group CLO on 1 October. He will continue to serve as group company secretary, a role he has held since April 2015. Before joining Flutter, Traynor worked in telecommunications, including seven and a half years with Vodafone and five years at Fónua.
Liu’s appointment was his first role in the gambling sector. He previously worked in other industries, including print at Xerox and retail at Target.
Reflecting on his time at Flutter, Liu said: “Initially sold to me as a three-month summer gig in London as Flutter’s interim group CLO, the opportunity to try something completely different at the world’s leading online gaming company was too irresistible. Of course, I wound up working there for almost 18 months. It was a wonderful detour from my retirement.”
“In my second attempt at retirement, I feel more confident and clear about how to make it more enjoyable, more meaningful and more relaxing,” He added. Flutter has not yet confirmed its long-term plans for the group chief legal officer position.
Traynor’s appointment provides continuity because he already understands Flutter’s governance structures and has worked with the company for more than a decade. The interim arrangement also gives Flutter time to assess whether it wants to appoint a permanent external legal leader or develop its existing executive team.
