Influencers Ordered to Repair Damage After Promoting Illegal Gambling

Sixteen popular Argentine influencers, including Wanda Nara, L-Gante, and Romina Uhrig, are facing consequences for promoting illegal online gambling platforms. Following a court order from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Gambling in Buenos Aires, the public figures must participate in a campaign against the activities they previously endorsed.

The campaign forms part of a legal settlement under Argentina’s restorative justice approach. It also raises awareness about the dangers of compulsive gambling and the risks tied to unregulated betting sites. The lead prosecutor, Juan Rozas emphasised that the strategy prioritises public awareness over punishment.

Court-Mandated Reparation Campaign

The influencers were charged with violating Article 301 of the Penal Code, criminalising the promotion and recruitment of gamblers for illegal operations. In response, they reached a comprehensive reparation agreement including three key commitments.

First, each influencer must record an institutional video using their voice and image, warning of the risks of illegal gambling and compulsive betting. These videos must be posted to their Instagram stories for three consecutive days. Also, they are required to upload videos or photos to their profile educating followers on the dangers of illegal gambling for a minimum of one month.

In addition, they must attend an in-person awareness course hosted by the City Lottery, focusing on the psychological and social effects of addiction. City Attorney General Juan Bautista Mahiques noted the importance of repairing the damage within social media, where it was caused.

The Growing Threat of Illegal Gambling Online

Authorities have identified over 110 influencers under investigation, with 27 already agreeing to similar settlements. The illegal promotions were often social media posts promising quick cash, but directing followers to unauthorised sites.

Many of these platforms operate outside Argentina and lack regulatory oversight. As a result of the crackdown, more than 400 illegal gambling sites have been blocked. Regulatory bodies such as LOTBA and the Argentine Chamber of Casinos and Bingos also take a more proactive role in reporting violations and independent complaints from concerned citizens.

How to Identify and Avoid Illegal Gambling

Authorities urge users to verify that gambling platforms are listed on official regulatory sites like LOTBA and ENREJA. Warning signs include promises of guaranteed wins, the use of influencers without legal disclosure, and lack of safety features like betting limits or self-exclusion options.

Gambling should never be used to cope with emotional stress. So, players are advised to set time limits, talk openly with loved ones, and seek professional help at the first signs of addiction.
