GambleAware Research Reveals Millions Want to Cut Down or Stop Gambling

GambleAware published findings showing over 5 million adults in Great Britain want to reduce or quit gambling. Most people seeking change don’t meet problem gambling criteria. The 2024 Treatment and Support Survey provides these figures. YouGov conducted research and presented results earlier this year. The public shows a growing willingness to use gambling risk reduction tools. GambleAware reports these results from analysis. 60.8% of adults in Great Britain gambled within the past year. Analysis reveals this percentage.

Mid-2024 population data shows 32.5 million gamblers exist. 5.3 million gamblers want to curb or stop their gambling. 73.8% of this group equals approximately 3.9 million people. The Problem Gambling Severity Index shows no indication of problem gambling for them. Young adults display a particularly strong trend, according to the charity. Three in ten gamblers aged 18 to 34 want to reduce or quit gambling. This represents about 2.3 million people.

Findings show widespread appetite for early support exists. Prevention services gain importance from these results. National tools and digital resources experienced significant uptake over two years. CEO Anna Hargrave says scale demonstrates ongoing demand. Accessible support remains necessary for many people. Charity and a wider support network assist continuously. Anyone concerned about gambling can access help for themselves or others.

Two types maximum within the same timeframe prevents excessive variety. Tools help people understand and manage gambling behaviours centrally. Transition to the new statutory gambling harms system continues. April next year marks the scheduled completion date. Incoming commissioners work with GambleAware currently.
