On April 1, the Senate of the Republic of Colombia approved bills officially recognising esports as a legitimate form of sports development. The bills include 026 of 2024 and 007 of 2023, plus 044 of 2023. This decision inspires industry growth by incorporating esports into the National Sports System under Law 181 of 1995.

The approval follows years of advocacy from players, leagues, and esports organisations. By granting formal recognition, Colombia joins a growing list of nations adapting their sports legislation to embrace competitive gaming.

A Victory for the Esports Community

The initiative was proposed by the House Representative for Santander, Érika Tatiana Sánchez Pinto. After the bill was passed, she thanked the Congress for its vote, acknowledging the need to create a platform for the youth and current players. “History was made today. Of more than a thousand bills presented each year, only about 10 percent or fewer are approved. This is a great victory for esports,” Sánchez Pinto said. 

Furthermore, she highlighted the role of FEDECOLDE, which collaborated on the project for nearly two years. Their efforts encourage players to pursue professional careers and establish an institutional framework to support the ecosystem’s growth.

Senators Welcome Modernization of Sports Law

Senator Norma Hurtado also praised the decision, noting that Colombian sports are being modernized for the first time in 26 years. She described the process as challenging but essential for opening new possibilities for athletes nationwide.

Hurtado defined esports as individual or team competitions through electronic systems, using video game examples like League of Legends, DOTA 2, and FIFA. With the new bill, the government formally acknowledges these competitions and builds a pathway of inclusion for esports athletes.

Senator Ana Paola Agudelo of the MIRA party expressed her support, stating that Colombia is adapting to new forms of media. She described the legislation as a balanced measure creating new incentives for young people to engage in competitive gaming.

A Step Toward the Future

The bill was widely supported, highlighting the need for cultural and technological changes to sports policy. The legislation will establish clear guidelines for esports development, training programs, and international competitiveness for Colombian players.
