Brazil launches centralised self-exclusion system for betting players

The Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) said on Wednesday that the new self-exclusion system is now running. With this system, players can choose to block themselves from all licensed betting websites in Brazil by filling out one request.

After a player signs up, they will not be able to place bets on any regulated betting site. The block covers the whole legal betting market, not just one company. This makes it easier for players to stop gambling without needing to contact many different operators.

Clear obligations for betting operators

Under the new rules, betting companies must stop blocked players from placing bets as soon as they are notified. They are also required to close the player’s betting account within three days. This ensures that once a player chooses to self-exclude, they cannot continue gambling on that platform.

If there is any money left in the account or any bets that are still waiting to be settled, the operator must return this money to the player within two days. Betting companies must also keep clear records of all actions and messages linked to the self-exclusion for at least five years. These records help regulators check that companies are following the rules correctly.

Betting operators are also banned from contacting blocked players with betting-related messages. They cannot send adverts, promotions, emails, or reminders about betting or returning to the platform. While a player is self-excluded, companies must avoid any communication that could encourage them to gamble again.

Advertising and contact restrictions

The rules stop betting companies from sending any messages to blocked players. This includes emails, texts, or any notifications that encourage betting. Even reminders about coming back to the platform are not allowed while the self-exclusion is active.

The goal is to help players avoid temptation and pressure to gamble. Regulators say that limiting contact can support better choices and lower the risk of gambling problems.

New self-limit tools and player options

Along with the self-exclusion system, Brazil has added more tools to encourage responsible gambling. Betting operators have 90 days to update their systems and include required self-limit features for players.

These self-limit tools are set when a player first signs up on a betting site. They let players control how much time they spend betting and how much money they wager. Players can also choose to get alerts or have their session automatically blocked when they reach their limits.

Players can also temporarily pause their accounts. While paused, the account is still visible, but no bets can be placed until the chosen period ends. Together, these changes show Brazil’s aim to make betting safer and more controlled as the regulated market grows.
