Atomic City, a slot game studio in India, is beginning to shut down. The parent company, g.games, has decided to focus on a new multiplayer project instead. The Head of Studio, Abhirup Mukherjee, shared that work at Atomic City is being paused and activities will slowly close.
Mukherjee explained that the studio is not closing because of failure, but because g.games wants to put more time and resources into a larger project called Flake. Many staff members have already been moved to work on Flake, while others are now looking for new jobs.
Focus Shifts to New Multiplayer Project, Flak
Flake is an upcoming multiplayer experience that g.games is working on. The company believes it will be one of the most ambitious projects in the online gaming industry. While full details of the project are still limited, the studio has described it as something that aims to change the way people play games together online.
Mukherjee said that the team at g.games is now fully focused on Flake, which is planned to launch next year. Because of this, Atomic City’s usual work has been reduced. Still, the studio will finish the slot games already in progress. These include The Blitz of Olympus, Mummy Mia, Double Trouble and Cheeky Fruits Trio Bonus, all of which should be released before Flake comes out.
Staff Movement and Job Searches
The shift in work has affected many employees. Some members of the Atomic City team have already moved internally to work on Flake. Others are currently searching for new job opportunities, within India and possibly abroad. Mukherjee encouraged companies in the iGaming sector who are hiring to reach out to him directly. He stated that he would be glad to connect interested employers with skilled professionals who were part of the Atomic City team.
Atomic City had staff based in Kolkata, and other team members were working remotely from Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad and Jaipur. This shows that the studio had a broad talent network across different parts of India.
Wider Impact on the Indian iGaming Industry
Atomic City is not the only gaming company affected during this period. Earlier this year, the Indian government introduced a ban on online gambling. This decision has led to major challenges for companies involved in the online gaming space. Reports suggest that as many as 200,000 people could lose their jobs as a result of the crackdown.
The wind down of Atomic City shows the larger challenges faced by the iGaming sector in India. While g.games continues to work toward the launch of its major new project, many skilled workers are now seeking stability and new roles in a changing industry environment.
