Telegram, the widely used messaging app, is under investigation in India over concerns about the proliferation of gambling advertisements on its platform. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center has launched an inquiry into the matter, raising red flags about the potential illegality of these ads.
According to an official familiar with the investigation, as revealed to a local news agency, while Telegram generally complies with India’s legal framework, the authorities are deeply troubled by the sheer volume of gambling advertisements on the platform. If Telegram fails to address this issue effectively, there’s a real possibility that the app could be blocked in India, a significant market for the messaging service.
