PAGCOR to Police Web-Based Betting Adverts with ASC, Directs Platforms’ Removal of Outdoor Adverts

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and the Ad Standards Council (ASC) plan to sign a Memorandum of Agreement regulating ads for online gambling platforms. PAGCOR started this by issuing a memorandum that commands the removal of outdoor ads linked to online gambling businesses.

Alejandro Tengco, who is PAGCOR chairman and CEO, spoke with DZMM on July 8 about the agency’s talks with ASC for an agreement to reduce the amount of online gambling billboards. Size limits for gambling ads on these platforms will be part of the new rules.

PAGCOR to Enforce Stricter Gambling Rules and Advertising Ban

Even though PAGCOR has some rules now, Tengco says those will be updated to make stricter rules. The new guidelines mainly want to stop illegal platforms that do not follow any rules and also target underage people. New restrictions will also affect licensed gambling operators to help reduce gambling addiction levels in Filipino society.

He shared in the interview that licensees cannot show ads during periods when most people are watching media. A recent PAGCOR order gives all licensees until August 15 to take down gambling outdoor ads. The removal directive targets all static and digital visuals placed on billboards, vehicles, or other outdoor locations.

PAGCOR Emphasises Responsible Gambling in New Ad Regulations amid Calls to Curb Illegal Operators

PAGCOR’s memorandum says that any new advertisements should only promote responsible gambling and must be approved by the regulatory body first. On the topic of policy, Tengco made it clear that he believes regulation, not an overall prohibition, should guide the country’s approach to online gambling ads. Several resolutions have been reached Congress, calling for investigations of the illegal online gambling sector as unlawful operators continue to work openly in the Philippines.
