The historic Necochea Casino Complex in Buenos Aires province is facing an uncertain future after a failed bidding process for its slot machine operations. With no interested parties coming forward, local authorities are exploring alternative uses for the oceanfront property. This has sparked debates over how best to revitalize the valuable site. 

The recent bid for the casino’s slot machine concession ended without a single offer. Mayor Arturo Rojas said the outcome was anticipated, referencing prior warnings from Buenos Aires Lottery officials about low investor interest. The platform operates under what Rojas called an irregular arrangement, as the original loan agreement has expired and only a temporary extension is in place. This situation has raised questions about the casino’s long-term viability and its ability to facilitate revenue and jobs for the local community.

City Explores New Use for Oceanfront Property

Mayor Rojas has expressed interest in repurposing the casino’s location after the failed gaming concession. He suggested relocating the casino could open up the land for other developments. According to Rojas, part of the site could become a dry plaza, while the rest will be used for real estate. 

The beachfront property, last appraised at around $4.5 million in 2020, has held its value despite challenging economic conditions. However, redevelopment faces major obstacles. Rojas pointed to high construction costs and low profitability as reasons discouraging private investors. “Urban development in Necochea isn’t profitable for investors. And no entrepreneur works at a loss,” he stated. 

These factors hinder interest in any major development on the site, despite its desirable location and potential to impact tourism long-term.

While the mayor continues to hope for a private investor to step in and transform the area, he acknowledged that other solutions might be necessary to protect local employment and stimulate the economy.
