Police in Ganjam district, Odisha, India, have finished a big operation against illegal gambling during the festive season. Over one month, they arrested 684 people and seized cash, phones and vehicles. Police said the aim was to keep public order and prevent gambling from increasing during celebrations.

Seized Cash, Phones and Vehicles Revealed

The enforcement drive took place from 15 September to 14 October, a time when gambling incidents usually increase due to festival gatherings. According to reports, officers seized RS 28.32 lakh in cash, which is equal to about 339,000 US dollars. They also confiscated 230 mobile phones and 35 motorcycles that were linked to gambling activities.

During this campaign, a total of 113 cases were registered across different police stations in the district. The Bhanjanagar Police reported the highest number of cases, with 21 separate incidents. These resulted in the arrest of 138 gamblers and the seizure of about RS 4.8 lakh. 

Police said the numbers show the problem is common in the area.

Police Warn of Rising Risks During Festive Season

Ganjam Superintendent of Police Subhendu Patra said illegal gambling usually increases during festival periods and can lead to fights, crime and trouble in local communities. He stated that police will continue strong monitoring and frequent checks to stop people from joining these activities and to protect peace and safety in the area.

The operation was carried out under the Orissa Prevention of Gambling Act, which allows fines or jail for those involved in gambling, including organisers. Police are still investigating to find the main people behind the gambling dens discovered during the drive. They believe catching the operators and leaders will help reduce illegal gambling and prevent these activities in the future.

Authorities Promise Continued Action to Protect Communities

Police sources said that this was more than just a crackdown. The campaign also aimed to send a strong message to the public about the risks of illegal gambling. Authorities want to discourage people from engaging in gambling during festivals, reminding them that these celebrations are meant for families and cultural joy.

The police have promised that enforcement efforts will continue across Ganjam district. Officers plan to keep a close watch on areas where gambling activities are suspected to take place. They also encourage community members to report gambling dens or any related disturbances.

With the arrest of hundreds and the seizure of valuable assets, police believe they have taken a major step toward reducing illegal gambling in the region. The operation shows a firm stance from law enforcement to maintain peace, promote safety and protect the community from activities that can lead to crime and social problems.
