The charity reports that present regulations must be changed because of child and youth harm. GambleAware put out a report which looks at the issue of online gambling’s effect on kids and youth. Current regulations are “outdated” and create a gambling harm risk for children, the group warns.
GambleAware made this statement recently: “Children see gambling marketing online despite gambling being an age-restricted product. They view this content before reaching an age for critical evaluation. Gambling becomes normalised and appears ‘risk-free’ to them. This situation increases their risk of experiencing gambling harm.”
Charity Calls for Stricter Online Gambling Regulations
The charity wants tighter restrictions on online gambling and marketing content now. The introduction of health warnings, which must be included in all gambling marketing material. Greater accountability is what is asked of online platforms for the content they host. Also in the news, out of 85,000 British children who reported in 2024 had issues with their own gambling. That is double the 2023 numbers.
Anna Hargrave serves as GambleAware Transition CEO currently. She said: “Gambling operators put significant resources into online marketing. This marketing makes people gamble more effectively. Children and young people see gambling content online too early. They cannot critically evaluate it or understand the risks. Current regulations for gambling marketing and advertising online came before children had easy internet access. We need urgent action to update these rules for the digital age. This helps keep children and young people safe from gambling harm.”
