Bangladesh Government Declares Zero-Tolerance Policy on Online Gambling

The Government of Bangladesh has announced a zero-tolerance policy against online gambling, pornography, and unethical advertising. The aim is to protect young people and promote a safer and more moral online environment across the country.

In a statement released by the Press Information Department (PID) on October 16, the government made it clear that it will not allow any form of gambling or adult content to be promoted or shared on digital or electronic platforms. The decision falls under the Cyber Security Act 2025 and the Pornography Control Act 2012, which will be used to take legal action against anyone involved in such activities.

Government Strengthens Online Regulations

The new directive applies to all media and advertising platforms, including newspapers, online portals, digital marketing agencies, and television broadcasters. It clearly bans the display of any content, image, or advertisement linked to gambling, betting, or pornography.

The rule also covers websites, mobile apps, and third-party advertising networks like Google AdSense. This means that even if the content comes from outside Bangladesh, it will be blocked if it promotes gambling or adult material.

The statement warned that anyone promoting or supporting such activities will be punished under the Cyber Security Act. Penalties may include fines, account suspension, or legal action, depending on how serious the offense is.

Celebrities and Online Influencers Warned

The government’s announcement included a strong warning to celebrities, influencers, and media professionals. They were advised not to take part in advertisements or promotional campaigns related to online gambling or adult entertainment.

Officials said that public figures have a big influence on young audiences, and their involvement in promoting these types of content goes against national values and laws. The government said it expects influencers to use their platforms responsibly and help promote a clean and safe digital space for everyone.

Monitoring and Enforcement Underway

The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) will be in charge of enforcing the new rules with support from the CID, BTRC, and other government agencies. It will watch online platforms closely and act quickly against any website, app, or operator that violates the law. This may include blocking sites, giving fines, or filing legal cases. Internet and mobile service providers must remove banned content and follow the rules.

Ad networks like Meta Ads and Google AdSense have also been told to stop showing restricted material in Bangladesh. The move is part of a larger effort to stop online gambling. Recently, the NCSA warned ESPNcricinfo over ad and tax violations and targeted more than 1,000 mobile agents involved in illegal betting.

With this step, the government aims to keep the internet in Bangladesh safe, moral, and youth-friendly while ensuring all online platforms obey the law.
