Argentina: Malargüe to Block Online Gambling Sites on Public Wi-Fi Networks

Key Points

  • The rule orders the blocking of online gambling websites on public Wi-Fi systems and sets up a city program against gambling addiction.
  • Public plans will also start, focusing on teaching people about digital topics and handling finances.
  • The step is a direct answer to more online gambling using mobile gadgets.

New Law Targets Public Wi-Fi Access

Malargüe, in Mendoza, Argentina, pushed through a city law that blocks gambling sites for anyone using public Wi-Fi networks. City Council members Magalí Acosta, Emilce Mansilla, and Rodrigo Hidalgo signed this law, and it requires a city program to stop online gambling. The rule asks for regular campaigns in schools for young people, plus offering help and support programs for those affected by gambling habits. The law notes that “gambling has always existed in society as a social habit, often linked with community events.”

Yet, it also notes that the government must act early, saying “the State must step in before issues start by setting public actions for digital lessons, financial know-how, and using tech properly.” Under this law, public Wi-Fi will also block sites showing sexual content or anything linked to child abuse. Another fact: Mar del Plata city rolled out a similar law in May, agreeing with no opposition to ban gambling sites on public Wi-Fi networks.

Rising Online Gambling via Mobile Devices

Councillors said that research and other findings show a notable jump in online gambling using portable gadgets, mainly smartphones. This bump brings a big threat, most for children and teens, because they can get on these sites fast and without adult checks. To answer this, the law wants to shield people at risk by setting up steps to lessen harmful website visits and risky habits, and show the State’s focus on keeping digital use safe.
