KSA and Roda JC Begin Study on Young Adults and Sports Betting

The Dutch Gaming Authority, known as KSA, has partnered with Roda JC Kerkrade to launch a new research project focused on young adults and their habits around sports betting. The study will take place in the Parkstad region during November and December 2025. This marks a rare and important collaboration between a national regulator and a professional football club, aimed at understanding how young people view and engage in sports betting.

A Unique Partnership Built on Responsibility

Roda JC is currently the only professional football club in the Netherlands that has chosen not to accept sponsorship from sports betting companies. This decision has made the club a strong partner for KSA in raising awareness about the risks of betting. Because of its clear stance, Roda JC has become an example of social responsibility in Dutch football.

The club’s involvement in the study will help KSA reach young adults in a direct and relatable way. By working together, the two organisations hope to gain honest insights that can support future public education campaigns. The collaboration also aims to open meaningful conversations about the growing pressure young people feel to take part in sports betting.

What the Research Will Explore

The study will focus on several key points. It will look at how common sports betting is among young adults, how much they spend, how often they bet and what they believe about betting. It will also examine common misunderstandings that may lead to risky behaviour.

Roda JC General Manager Jordens Peters said the goal is to reduce the idea that sports betting is normal or harmless. He noted that betting is discussed everywhere, which can make young people feel pressure to take part. He believes the research will help the club and KSA guide young people better.

KSA Chairman Michel Groothuizen added that the study will show what young adults think and what they actually do when it comes to betting. He said this information is important for creating stronger rules and awareness efforts. Groothuizen also stated that Roda JC is a trusted partner in the region and that the project may later expand across the country.

Results Expected in 2026

The study results are expected in early 2026. These findings will help create new educational programs and communication tools that explain the risks of sports betting to young adults. The goal is to give them clearer information that can guide their everyday choices.

KSA and Roda JC hope the research will guide efforts to reduce gambling harm and help young people make safer choices across the Netherlands. They believe the study will provide a strong foundation for future awareness campaigns.
