The country’s gambling regulator supported this action.
Key Points:
- Irish financial group PTSB launches card-blocking for gambling purchases.
- Many other banks in Ireland have already set up similar options.
- GRAI has shared news that work on a national self-exclusion list has started.
Permanent TSB (PTSB), an Irish bank, talked about its new voluntary card-blocking feature for Irish gamblers who want to stop card payments for gambling. This step comes after GRAI, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland advised banks to add more financial barriers for players in the Irish gambling sector. GRAI, working together with the Irish Banking Culture Board, Irish Banking and Payments Federation, and separate banks, oversaw steps for bringing new player protection features into finance.
Other Irish Banks Also Offer Gambling Blocks
Now, Revolut, AIB, EBS, Bank of Ireland, and PTSB have all mentioned that their customers in Ireland can use blocking tools. Speaking about the change, Anne Marie Caulfield, who leads GRAI, explained: “We welcome PTSB’s in-app gambling block. This new step gives good safety to consumers and cuts the risk of gambling problem harms.” With this recent news, GRAI also made clear that a countrywide self-exclusion project has already started.
It is useful to mention, Ireland set new rules for gambling in October 2024. After this new law, GRAI began to control the gambling sector in Ireland from March this year, and then moved its main office to Dublin in April. Just this month, GRAI also presented fresh licensing details before their new market system starts later this year.
