Norsk Tipping Faces a Potential NOK 10m Fine Over the Eurojackpot notification Error

The problem came when a formula changed Euro cents into Norwegian kroner wrongly by multiplying by 100 instead of dividing by 100, so the prize notices showed 10,000 times higher than the actual numbers.

Key Points

  • Norsk Tipping told 47,000 players in June about wrong Eurojackpot winnings from a conversion mistake.
  • The Lottery Authority sent a warning of a possible NOK 10m fine, equal to 0.1% turnover.
  • After repeated system problems, Norsk Tipping lottery operations now face a full review.

Norsk Tipping got a violation notice and might face up to NOK 10 million in fines after a big Eurojackpot system error earlier this summer. On 27 June, about 47,000 players received wrong messages showing huge prizes from a wrong calculation. Among these, 30,000 people saw alerts by SMS or push notification. The Norwegian Lottery Authority called the case a “serious breach of trust” and reminded that operators must always run gambling in a legal, fair, and open way.

Formula Error Causes Eurojackpot Calculation Mistake

The mistake came from a bad formula that changed Euro cents into kroner, multiplying by 100 when it should have been divided. Even though the draw happened correctly and the issue got fixed fast, officials blamed Norsk Tipping for not finding the mistake in testing or in their internal controls. The company has three weeks to answer the notice before the final decision comes.

This case adds to many other compliance problems already facing the state-owned gambling operator. Earlier cases show NOK 25 million wrong casino payout, technical faults stopping iPhone and iPad users from logging out, and lottery draw mistakes that changed winning odds for cooperative players for many years. Because of repeated failures, the Lottery Authority will now run a wide inspection of Lotto, Eurojackpot, and Vikinglotto.
