Macau GGR Reaches MOP 5.2bn in Early June Amid Seasonal Dip

Industry experts attribute Korean pop concert and Dragon Boat festival as the chief drivers.

  • Macau recorded MOP 5.2 billion (US$646 million) in gaming revenue over the first eight days of June, according to Macao Daily’s sources.
  • The daily average revenue went down by 5% compared to May, but experts considered it a strong performance for this off-peak period.
  • Forecasts now estimate Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in June could increase by 4% to 7% compared to the same month last year.

As per research, even though the season generally sees less travel, a Korean pop concert and the Dragon Boat Festival holiday helped the figures go up more than expected. J.P. Morgan’s latest report indicated the daily average during these days was MOP 650 million, which is a little under the MOP 684 million daily average seen in May.

Macau Gaming Revenue Shows Modest Growth Amid Seasonal Slowdown

Despite being the start of a quiet season, this daily figure was judged to be healthy. According to bank projections, GGR is predicted to slow down somewhat for the rest of June, with daily amounts between MOP 600 million and MOP 620 million.

For the whole month, J.P. Morgan forecasts gaming revenue to rise by 4% to 7% from last year. That would mean for the second quarter, growth might reach around 3% to 4% versus the same quarter in 2024, and about a 1% to 2% increase over the first quarter. It is helpful to remember that things like concerts and local holidays sometimes bring temporary rises in visitor numbers and gaming activities, especially in slower periods.

Macquarie’s analysis also found that the average daily gaming revenue from 2 to 8 June dropped 5% versus the week before, but stayed flat year-on-year. This analysis further noted that volumes in both mass-market and VIP betting went down by approximately 5% and 1-3% month-on-month. Net win margins for gaming have remained steady, sitting in the 2.7% to 3% range.
